Round trips

A loop from right here

Say how far or how long, and which way to head out. ArcRoute builds a curvy loop from where you stand and brings you back to it. Shuffle, and you get a different one of the same length.

  • Distance or time. Fifty to four hundred kilometres, one to eight hours. The loop lands at or just under it.

  • A direction, or any. North, east, south or west sends the loop that way; a shuffle rolls a new one.

  • Curvy by default. Balanced, Twisty or Wild. A loop is a pleasure ride, so Direct is not on the menu.

The Sunday problem is not where to go. It is that you have three hours and want them spent on good roads. A round trip answers exactly that.

How it works

How a round trip comes together

A target, a direction and a curviness; a loop that lands on the target; a ride that behaves like any other once you are on it.

Set a target, not a destination

Distance from 50 to 400 km or time from 1 to 8 hours, a start that defaults to where you are, and a quarter of the compass to head out into.

  • Any direction is the whole circle. Pick a side and every shuffle tries a new bearing in that quarter.
  • Balanced, Twisty or Wild. The loop bends toward curves like any planned route.
  • Highways, ferries, tolls and closures off. The same toggles as the planner.

It lands on the number you picked

A loop generator tends to come back long, so ArcRoute measures the loop and quietly re-asks until it sits at or just under your target.

  • Three hours stays three hours. Almost never four.
  • Corners on real roads. No dips into a dead end, a field track or an industrial estate.
  • Your setup is remembered. Distance, direction and curviness come back; the start is always where you are now.

On the bike, a ride like any other

Navigate it now or save it to your rides, and ride it whenever.

  • Set off the wrong way? ArcRoute flips the loop rather than sending you straight home.
  • Wander off mid-loop? It guides you back onto the tour, not back to the start.
  • Recorded, like every ride. It lands in your heatmap once you have ridden it.

All questions and support

How long can a loop be?

From 50 to 400 km by distance, or from one to eight hours by time. ArcRoute measures the loop it builds and re-asks until it sits at or just under what you picked, so a three-hour pick almost never becomes four.

Can I choose which way the loop goes?

Yes. North, east, south or west each covers a quarter of the compass, and every shuffle tries a new bearing inside it. Any direction keeps the whole circle in play.

What if I do not like the loop?

Shuffle. You get a genuinely different loop of the same length from the same start. Change any setting and it regenerates on its own.

Why can it not build a loop sometimes?

A loop needs open roads around the start. By the sea or at the end of a valley, ArcRoute tries a couple of other loop shapes by itself, keeping your length and direction. From a dead end, a tiny village or a very short distance it may still come up empty; it says so, and a shuffle, a longer distance or a different start usually fixes it.

Can I ride the loop through a place I want to see?

Not while it is being built: a round trip has no destination by design. Save the loop, open it in Rides and tap Replan, and you can add the place there; the ride stays a round trip as long as it comes back to its start. To ride to a specific spot, plan a ride instead.

Does a round trip need a signal?

Yes, to build it and to reroute on it: the loop comes from ArcRoute’s routing server. Once saved, it replays from the phone like any ride.
